Permian Panthers

  • Texas State Champions: Katy Tigers and Allen Eagles

For the third year in a row, the team that knocked the Permian Panthers out of the Playoffs has gone on to win the Texas State Champions. The Allen Eagles defeated FB Hightowere 21-14 to win the Texas 5A Division 1 State Title at Reliance Stadium. In Division 2, the Katy Tigers claimed back to back State Titles by defeating Wylie 17-3. Congratulations to all four teams.

  • The Road ends at Reliance

The end of the Road to Reliance Stadium for the 5A Texas High School State Championships ends this weekend as four teams become two in the two divisions of the 5A Titles.

In Division One, Permian Panthers coquerers the Allen Eagles have slipped into the State Title Fight by defeating Stony Point 23-21 in a tight one. They will play FB Hightower who whipped SA Clark 28-7. On form the Eagles are entitled to go in favourites for the Title

Division Two will see Katy take on Wylie for the title after Wylie beat Copperas Cove 23-7 while Katy flexed its muscle against Smithson Valley 41-19.

  • Allen Knocks over Trinity

For the last two seasons, the team that has knocked over the Permian Panthers has gone on to win State. 2007 saw Euless Trinity beat Permian in the third round of the playoffs and the year before it was Southlake Carroll. This year we saw Allen beat Permian, again in Round 3, and then faced defending champs Euless Trinity in Round 4.

This year we saw Allen defeat Trinity 32-21 and advance to the semi-finals and Region 1 champs. Without doubt, Region 1 is the strongest Region and at times 15 teams from this region has accounted for the Top 25 State Rankings. It is common for the winner of Region 1 to take the title, and it would seem the case again this year.

In Division 1, we see Allen take on Stony Point for a place in the final, while FB Hightower take on SA Clark for the other spot. Division 2 sees Wylie take on Copperas Cove to fight for a position against the winner of Katy and Smithson Valley.

  • Panthers Give Allen too much Start

Down by 18, proved to be too much by just 2inches for the Permian Panthers going down 28-22. A final throw of the dice, with just minutes on the clock, missed getting a 1st down by just 2 minutes.

The Permian defence struggled to hold the Allen offence with the Allen passing game leaving Permian grasping at the attackers. The Panthers  offece stuttered early with incompletes and dropped ball giving Allen field position and possession. A brave second half comeback just didn't breach the gap. Sherard Ray was the outstanding pler onthe field, single handedly dragging Permian back into the game.

A 12-1 season for the Panthers who again have reached the third round of the playoffs for the second consequtive year.

  • Pemian Face Allen

The Permian Panthers are the sole District 2 contender after both Midland High and Odessa High were bundled out of the play-off race by Arlington schools.

Allen beat Coppell for the right to take on the Panthers in the next round, while Euless Trinity rolled over Plano 42-35 in a rib tickler of a game.

  • Permian pounds Burleson in area playoff

ABILENE Playoff games are supposed to be dogfights.

Battles designed to test a team's mettle.

Permian High School's football team put a little extra polish on its resume by blowing out Burleson 56-21 in a Class 5A Division I area playoff game Friday.

The Panthers scored on every first-half possession and raced out to a 42-7 halftime lead.

With the victory, Permian (12-0) advanced to play either Allen or Coppell at 4 p.m. Nov. 28 at Texas Stadium in Irving in a regional playoff. Allen (10-1) and Coppell (8-3) play at 8 tonight at Texas Stadium in the area round.

"We had another fast start in the half, and that was the difference in the game," Permian head coach Darren Allman said. "We knew it would take our defense a little bit to adjust to everything going on."

Burleson chose to play its corners eight or nine yards off of the line of scrimmage, and Permian quarterback Trevor Adams took advantage by completing his first 12 passes.

Adams finished 17 of 20 for 269 yards and two touchdowns to Ryan Rumbaugh.

In the process, Adams broke the Permian record for single-season passing yards, a mark set by Taylor Byrd last year.

Byrd had 2,449 yards a year ago. Adams now has 2,526 yards this year.

"We watched film of them playing offenses like ours," Adams said. "They played off, and the quick stuff was working."

Adams completed five passes on Permian's first drive, and Sherard Ray capped the drive with a 12-yard touchdown run to take a 7-0 lead.

Burleson answered with a 16-yard touchdown run by James Owen that tied the score.

Facing a 2nd-and-29 on Permian's ensuing drive, Adams completed a 51-yard pass to Alan Castillejos to keep the drive alive.

Castillejos banged into the end zone from 3-yards out on the next play.

"Coach just called the right play," Castillejos said. "We work on that play every week, and we used it when we needed it."

Burleson returned the ensuing kickoff to the Permian 31-yard line, but this time the Panthers' defense held.

Joey Mendez stuffed Burleson fullback Blake Smith on fourth down to end the drive.

"Samson McClane and William Ritter opened up the line for me," Mendez said. "It was a blitz, and there was no one there to block me."

Permian responded with another Castillejos touchdown - this time from 1-yard out - and Anthony McDowell ended the Elks' next drive by returning an interception 18 yards for a touchdown.

From there the Panthers never looked back.

After Mendez forced a fumble to end Burleson's next drive, Adams scored on a 4-yard touchdown run.

But Permian's quarterback wasn't done yet.

He found Ryan Rumbaugh for a 12-yard touchdown pass to give the Panthers a 42-7 lead heading into the locker room.

"As long as we've got some decent conditions and we can continue to be balanced offensively, we have a chance to win every week," Allman said.

Permian's defense struggled against Burleson's Wing-T attack - Owen rushed for 114 yards, and Smith added 99 - but the Panthers held the Elks in check long enough to build the big first-half lead.

"They try to grind out the clock, and you're just trying to get off the field," Panthers defensive end Adedayo Balogun said. "We just wanted to get the ball back to our offense."

Because the offense hasn't had many problems in these playoffs.

  • Bronchos and Bulldogs win through to Week 2.

The Odessa High Bronchos launched into the 2008 State Play-offs with a convincing 54-22 victory over El-Paso Franklin while the Midland High Bulldogs defeated El Paso Coronado 38-16. From District 2, Odessa and Permian stay alive in Div 1, while Midland stay alive in Dv 2. In major upsets, both Midland Lee and Abiline Eagles have been knocked out in the first round of the playoffs.

Next Weeks games sees the Permian Panthers(11-0) take on Burleson (5-6) while Odessa (9-2) tak
